{"id":473,"date":"2012-03-17T14:03:12","date_gmt":"2012-03-17T18:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spikenzielabs.com\/blog\/?p=473"},"modified":"2019-01-28T23:26:31","modified_gmt":"2019-01-29T03:26:31","slug":"the-music-challenge-box-created-for-cbcs-canadas-smartest-person","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spikenzielabs.com\/blog\/the-music-challenge-box-created-for-cbcs-canadas-smartest-person\/","title":{"rendered":"The Music Challenge Box &#8211; Created for CBC&#8217;s Canada&#8217;s Smartest Person"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spikenzielabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/cbcbox2.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.spikenzielabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/cbcbox2.jpg\" alt=\"Front View CBC Music Challenge Box\" title=\"Front View CBC Music Challenge Box\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-486\"><\/a><br \/>\nOftentimes we get approached to help with a project, and sometimes we are given the mandate to &#8216;Make Something Awesome&#8217;. &nbsp;Here is one of those times.<\/p>\n<p>For CBC&#8217;s game show <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/smartestperson\/\" target=\"_BLANK\">&#8220;Canada&#8217;s Smartest Person&#8221;<\/a> we were contracted to create an on-set prop that is actually a functioning music guessing device. &nbsp;The purpose of this, is to test ones musical memory, and seeing how well they can play back a set of notes, adding each note to the set for a given number of total notes.<\/p>\n<p>We used the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spikenzielabs.com\/Catalog\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=12\" target=\"_BLANK\">Arduino<\/a>, and our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spikenzielabs.com\/Catalog\/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=36&amp;products_id=333\" target=\"_BLANK\">Shield Dock<\/a> to prototype the 2 boxes for the production. &nbsp;Using our laser cutter, we crafted the housings, and arcade style buttons to take the abuse that an excited game show contestant will be throwing at it.<\/p>\n<p>The notes coming out are triggered by a MIDI signal. &nbsp;We set the baud rate of the the serial on the arduino to 31200. &nbsp;Soldered on a MIDI jack, and with that, you can hook it to an iPad, Mac running Garageband, any computer running a software synth, or a real hardware synth.<\/p>\n<p>The two semi-translucent panels are back-lit with a set of bright 10mm LEDS. &nbsp;(The same ones used in our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spikenzielabs.com\/Catalog\/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=35&amp;products_id=286\" target=\"_BLANK\">Dice Kit<\/a>). &nbsp;Each panel has an array of six LEDs, controlled by a MOSFET, pushing the brightness to the safest maximum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spikenzielabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/cbcbox1.jpg\"><img class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-487\" title=\"Backside of CBC Music Challenge Box\" src=\"http:\/\/www.spikenzielabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/cbcbox1.jpg\" alt=\"Backside of CBC Music Challenge Box\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oftentimes we get approached to help with a project, and sometimes we are given the mandate to &#8216;Make Something Awesome&#8217;. &nbsp;Here is one of those times.
