Check out this awesome update: We changed the "art" on the back of the SCC3733 so it is now "Miller Solarengine circuit" ready! This means that if you want to, you can solder the necessary component on the back of the solar cell and get a functional solar-engine circuit right on the solar cell!

The Miller Solarengine is pretty well described in the "Bicore Experimenter's PCB" series of circuits, and you can find the relevant documentation here.

Note: The addition of the artwork to the solar cell in no way affects using it for plain solar-energy applications. It's just there if you want to use it!

This is our first replacement solar cell for the Panasonic Sunceram series. It's a bit heavier, but it's also the same size, and much more robust - no more broken glass, or touchy solder-pads! These are mounted on sturdy fibreglass backing, with designated polarity solder tabs.

As for performance, these panels are pretty much the equal or better than their Panasonic counterparts, with only marginally less performance in low-light conditions. It offers 6.1V at 23mA in its 37x33mm package.

Here's a tip submitted by Rick Steenblik:

After using your SCC3733 solar cells for a couple of bots I noticed that they can be altered to provide about 3.3v at near 80ma (in full sun) by cutting the bus connector on the back to electrically separate the two sides of the cell and then to cross-connect the two sides of the bus to the + and - contacts. This puts the two sides in parallel.

Nice - half the voltage; twice the current, still all in the same solar package!
